Hey everyone, I hope you are all doing well!! This past week has been an absolute wreck of a week. Days feel so monotonous and I’ve been struggling to sleep and eat properly. I’ve been having so many breakdowns and honestly, school keeps on introducing new things which I feel obliged to do because I want to apply to some fairly competitive universities. Today is also my grandfather’s death anniversary and frankly I still can’t believe it’s been a whole year. I am hoping I don’t break down in school because I have a whole day of lessons and so much stuff to catch up on because I’ve been struggling to focus in classes. Anyways, this is your sign to take a break from life a bit and just do something that relaxes you. Something you really enjoy that you’ve not had a chance to do because of the way life is at the moment for you.
The Egg by Andy Weir
I swear this isn’t a book about what came first, the chicken or the egg (although we all know it was the chicken because there were only the right kinds of cells for a chicken at the start of existence or something like that). I wouldn’t really classify it as a book, it is more of a short story and only took me around ten minutes to read it but it has had me reflecting on it for more than a week now.
In summary, this short story is essentially a conversation between you (God) and a man who has passed away. It basically states that after death, you reincarnate into another person from any time period and of any type of morality. Once you have reincarnated into everyone in existence, you become “God”. It brings up the idea that you could have been Jesus in one life but then one of his disciples in the next.
My Thoughts
There is a phrase which says, “There is nobody else in the universe, only you and me” which really had me thinking because it is saying that every single person in the world is just a different reincarnation of me. We are all the same person and after we have experienced life in every single way possible, good or bad, you become God. It suggests that we are all on the path to becoming God. I know many people don’t believe in God so I guess this theory may sound pretty out there.
I mean I guess it does make sense because God is omniscient (all knowing) and the only way you could achieve that is if you were to live life with every single outcome possible.
Does this go against the idea of free will? I mean if every single person is me and I live life in every single way that every single person has lived then surely it means all the choices in my life are predetermined? If this theory were to be proved true somehow, it goes against what so many people are taught to believe. Even if we didn’t have free will, we are taught to believe we do because we have the opportunity to make choices. I guess this can only apply if you are getting reincarnated into a famous person in history which we know a lot about as we already know the decisions and outcomes of different situations.
Furthermore, this could also raise the question of why moral evil exists. Moral evil is the type of evil that is created through the action or inaction of humans, for example, sexual assault. If we are everyone and everyone is us, then why would problems like these exist because surely we are causing harm to ourselves? I could go really in depth with this because currently in philosophy we are studying evil and suffering but maybe that’s a topic for another day.
I am very sorry this is shorter than normal and not to my usual standard (which I hope is fairly high haha) but yesterday I got the second covid vaccine and I’ve been super sick so I have to end it here :(( I hope everyone has an amazing day and week ahead!! I’ll see you next week, love you guys <33
